The mele (song) “My Yellow Ginger Lei (Kuʻu Lei ʻAwapuhi Melemele)” By John Keawehawaii was a favorite of my paternal tutu whom this brand is named. She would sing this song any time I played it. Even when her memory was fading, she still could hum and sing along all the way up till the end. The green image in this design is in memory of the last muʻumuʻu she wore. It is only fitting that my first design should be for her. The back of the shirt, “Hoʻohihi ka manaʻo ia ʻoe”, is a line taken from the song that translates to “Entranced with thoughts of you”. This song will always have a special place in my heart and I will remember the fond memories I shared with her always. Me ke aloha pau ʻole. Everlasting love.
