“‘Auamo Kou Kūleana” has many different facets to its meaning but it roughly translates to carrying your responsibilities, no matter how hard it is or how heavy the burden, and to keep persevering and to never give up. This design is inspired by my maternal grandparents as they have had a tremendous role in my life growing up. Anyone who knows my papa and tutu know that they embody the saying “‘Auamo Kou Kūleana” to the fullest. To playing a pivotal role in the Hawaiian renaissance movement of the ’70s, to practicing Hawaiian arts and sharing their knowledge and wisdom, to fighting and winning the state in their kūleana land cases, to inspiring the next generation of Native Hawaiians. They have, and continue to, carry so much responsibilities within the lāhui and their ‘ohana and they inspire me every day.
The design of wai (water) represents many things as water can change its shape and reroute itself as it pleases, it nurtures all living things, it can be calm one moment and violent the next. Water is our essence of life and the design pays homage to my maternal tutu’s traditional kākau (tattoo) on her wrist that have the different flows of water. The white dots within the shapes are the points of grooves and etching within completed carving pieces done by my papa. The milo leaf represents him and his craft while the wauke leaf represents my tutu and her artwork in kapa making (traditional bark cloth).
